Website hosting for small business: what you actually need

Most small business sites need less hosting than they are sold, and one thing almost nobody sells: a check before a new version goes live. Start from what your site is, then pick.

First, what kind of site is it?

  • Plain files. Pages, styles and pictures, perhaps a form that sends to a mail service. Most brochure sites and landing pages, and anything a static site generator builds.
  • A CMS such as WordPress. Pages put together by code, content in a database, plugins that need updates.
  • A shop or an application with accounts and payments. That is a conversation about the build, and the hosting is settled with it.

The first needs a host that serves files quickly and safely. The second needs somebody to run the software. The third is not a hosting plan you pick from a list.

What every small business site needs

  • https, with a certificate that is issued and renewed without anybody remembering to.
  • Your own domain, pointing at the site.
  • A way back. When a new version is wrong, the previous one should be serving again in a moment, not after a restore.
  • Somebody watching. A site that is down on a Saturday should not wait for Monday to be noticed.

What it usually does not need: a control panel with a hundred buttons, a server of its own, or a bundle of mailboxes. Email is a separate service. None of our tiers hosts mailboxes, so your mail stays with your mail provider.

The part almost nobody sells: a check before going live

Most hosts publish whatever you upload. Ours checks every new version first. The accessibility checks run on its pages, and by default a version with a critical or serious finding does not go live: the version before it keeps serving.

You can still publish over the gate when you decide to. That choice is written on the version, and its signed record is withdrawn. Every version that went live through the gate keeps the signed record of what passed, and anyone can check it against our key.

  • Publish, {price:hosting_publish} a month. A site made of files, the release gate, the signed record, an address under oakmonttechnologies.com and one domain of your own.
  • Managed, {price:hosting_managed} a month. A WordPress or generated site run by us: nightly backups with a restore we test, updates applied and checked again, a staging address, and a rollback when a version's score drops.
  • Keep, {price:hosting_keep} a month. Managed, plus monitors on the live site between versions and the edit hours of Website Care Pro.

What the files tier takes

  • HTML pages with their styles, scripts, images, fonts, video, audio and PDF files.
  • A zip of the built site up to 300 MB and 3,000 files, each file up to 25 MB.
  • No code that runs on the server, such as PHP. A contact form has to send to a service that receives it.
  • Your domain goes live once a TXT record at _oakmont.yourdomain proves it is yours. The certificate is issued after that.

A site you built yourself

A site we built or fitted is published as part of its delivery. A site you built somewhere else can be published here too, as long as you have an active plan with us.

Choosing in a minute

  • Plain files, changed a few times a year: Publish, and a sheet of edits when something changes.
  • WordPress or a generator, changed now and then: Managed.
  • A site somebody should keep changing for you every month: Keep.

What the rest of the upkeep costs is in the website maintenance cost guide.

Questions people ask

  1. How much does website hosting cost for a small business? With us, $19, $49 or $79 a month: a site made of files, a WordPress or generated site we run, or a site we run and keep changing for you.
  2. Can I use my own domain?Yes, one on every tier. It goes live once a TXT record proves the domain is yours. Until then the site answers on its own address under oakmonttechnologies.com.
  3. Is email included? No. None of the tiers hosts mailboxes. Your mail stays with your mail provider, and only the website's records point at us.
  4. What happens if a new version breaks something? When the checks find a critical or serious problem, the version does not go live and the one before it keeps serving. On Managed and Keep, a version whose score drops is rolled back.
